You won’t find many ruins from Classical times in the Périgord but the Romans were here in force and Vesunna, as the city was then known, became one of the most important in the region. It had been the chief stronghold of the Gaulish Petrocorii tribes and as such it was necessary to show who was now in charge!

One of the most important buildings was the Temple of Vesunna named for the eponymous Goddess of the city. Nowadays, only the ruins of the tower are still standing but they are nevertheless an impressive sight. 20 metres high and 17 metres in diameter, the tower was probably surrounded by a circle of columns, or a peristyle, with a large classical portico and enclosed in a courtyard.

Tour de Vésone

The tower is located in the Jardin de Vésone only about 50 metres from the splendid Musée Gallo-Romain de Périgueux.
