Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne
A beautiful place on the Dordogne
Quite literally Beaulieu is a beautiful place on the Dordogne river with fine renaissance houses and the magnificent Romanesque abbey church of St-Pierre. It is unsurprisingly one the local Plus Beaux Villages
In pre-revolutionary times the town was dominated by the ancient Benedictine Abbey of St-Pierre, although these days only the abbey church remains. Nevertheless, the church is a magnificent Romanesque structure which together with the many other fine edifices in the town such, as a 16th century tower and the 12th century Chapelle des Pénitents, also Romanesque, make Beaulieu a fascinating place to visit.
However, be sure not to miss the view of the town from the opposite bank of the river – the peaceful Dordogne River forms a lake here meandering past the old buildings on the far bank and makes for an unforgettable sight.
