History

Fighting for love

Athens has a rich vein of history that’s well covered by its glut of museums as listed in Museums in Athens - A Complete Guide to all the Museums in Athens.

Foremost among them are the Acropolis Museum and the Vorres Museum–Athens which do a great job at presenting Greece’s ancient past and showcasing some of the more modern exhibits of Greece’s present.

Greek history

Greece’s long and turbulent history loosely divides into these main periods:

  • Ancient Greece generally refers to the period from 12-9th century B.C to the end of AD600. It includes the period in which the Acropolis of Athens was built and the Minoan civilisation thrived and leaving us the Minoan Palace of Knossos in Crete. It was also a time when the Ancient Greeks consider the centre of the earth to be in Delphi, which they accordingly covered in temples.
