There isn’t a bad time to visit Athens. Summers are particularly hot so most tourists – and locals – head to the Greek Islands to escape the heat of the concrete.

Climate

Greece as a country has what’s known as a Mediterranean climate in that the summers are hot and dry, with mild and wet winters.

Bearing this in mind, spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) are perfect for your Athens city break if you’re wanting to walk up to the Acropolis of Athens, for example and spring and summer (Jun-Aug) perfect for island breaks such as the island nearest Athens – Aegina.

Festivals

Many Greek festivals are based around the Orthodox religion, or have a cultural base. Listed are some of the most popular.

Apokries

Greek carnival (Feb/Mar)

Athens & Epidaurus Festival

Greece's premier arts festival (May)

Greek Easter

Most important celebration in the Greek calander (Apr)

Greek Independence Day

A day for all Greeks to celebrate (Mar)
