Tipping

Pointers of how to tip when in Athens

Greek Euros

It’s polite to tip in Athens and Greece, but certainly not expected. If you try to enforce a tip it can be considered rude, so don’t always expect to, especially if you’re eating in a family run business where the family prepare the meals.

Cafes

Usually one euro can be left behind, or there is sometimes a tipping jar left at the till.

Restaurants

You might find that there’s a service charge already added to the bill, especially in the higher end restaurants, so double check. Otherwise 5-10% is a good average to go by.

Bars

It’s not usual to tip a bar tender

Tours

Because tour guides are privately hired ie: for the Acropolis, Museums, etc and they aren’t employed by the actual venue, it’s customary to leave a tip after the tour of anything up to €5 per person for a group tour.

A private tour would more likely be €20 per person per day.

Taxis

Taxis are notoriously cheap in Greece, so to help you navigate this, round up to the nearest whole Euro.

Housekeeping

Usually one Euro per day for AirBNB or hotel staff for exceptional service.
