Victorian & Industrial Times

Racecourse Colliery, Black Country Museum The winding house and chimney are just being constructed. The earlier tin-shed winding house is behind.

Pivotal to the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Midlands’ Black Country area included Dudley, Sandwell and parts of Walsall. Coal mines, steel mills, iron foundries, glass factories, brickworks and coking facilities defined area, which may have taken its Black Country name from the coal seams or the general fall out of black soot, or both.

Canal networks were established to transport goods, while housing and industry flourished between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, in stark contrast to the surrounding rural farmland, countryside, medieval villages and market towns.

Mills and potteries were constructed and grand houses were built by wealthy industrialists.

Today manufacturing continues with cars and more – and there are many fascinating museums and windows onto the revolution that changed the world.
