Sulgrave Manor
Washington's ancestral home
Just over thirty minutes’ drive from Warwick, Sulgrave was the home of George Washington's ancestors, near Banbury. Small but beautiful, it was built by Lawrence Washington and parts of the original building include the Great Hall.
There are stories of Queen Elizabeth l hiding here as a young princess and the rooms and displays are striking – I just love the New Elizabethan Embroideries around the 16th century bed in the Great Chamber. These were created in the traditional 16th century way by volunteers from the USA and UK over ten years starting in 1995. Old meets new with richness and texture.
Don't miss the George Washington Exhibition, the rose garden and Garden of the National Herb Centre. The Buttery serves light refreshments.
