Shropshire Hills
Covering nearly a quarter of the county, these hills – designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – are made for walking, with hill forts, Bronze Age remains including stone circles. The Long Mynd is a beautiful stretch of heather-covered heathland overlooking Carding Mill Valley, a National Trust area that’s great base for walkers, bikers and a good (but often busy) picnic spot for day visitors.
Caer Caradoc is an impressive landmark topped by an iron age fort. Woodland and fields feature with miles of woodland on Wenlock Edge.
Walking tour companies include HF Holidays whose new Shropshire Guided Trail for 2022 is a linear route through the spectacular Shropshire Hills. It’s a 7-night centre-based guided holiday walking the stunning sections of the Shropshire Way to Ludlow with added wildlife stops and local geologists’ gems. There’s also a fourteen night Offa’s Dyke Guided Trail. More walking holidays include routes in Wales with coastal walks.
